ASTM B163 / ASME SB163 is the standard specification for seamless nickel and nickel-alloy condenser and heat-exchanger tubes. N02201 (Alloy 201) likes N02200, it's a commercially pure nickel (99.0% min) known for its excellent resistance to corrosion, particularly in caustic environments, and its high thermal and electrical conductivity. Its seamless nature ensures reliability under pressure and in corrosive service.N02201 resists corrosion in a wide range of reducing and neutral media, including fresh water, natural waters, non-oxidizing salts, and alkaline solutions. It is particularly resistant to caustic alkalies.


N02201 maintains good strength and ductility from cryogenic temperatures up to moderately high temperatures. Alloy 201 has very low carbon content (<0.02%), which prevents carbide precipitation (sensitization) during welding and service, preserving its corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zones.

SB163 N02201 tubes common applications include:

 

Caustic Evaporators and Concentrators
Tubes are used in heat exchangers that concentrate sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH) solutions from weak concentrations to 50% or even 73%. Stainless steel would corrode catastrophically in this service.
Chemical Processing Industry (CPI)
1.Organic Chlorination Processes: Handling chlorinated hydrocarbons and associated by-products like HCl.
2.Production of Plastics and Synthetic Fibers: Where corrosive catalysts or intermediates are present.
3.Fine Chemical and Pharmaceutical Synthesis: For reactors and heat exchangers handling aggressive media where purity is critical (nickel ions are less problematic than corrosion products from other metals).
Power Generation & Marine
1.Feedwater Heaters in Advanced Plants: Where water chemistry is highly controlled, and reliability is paramount.
2.Specialized Condensers: In geothermal plants or in coastal/offshore facilities where cooling water is highly aggressive, brackish, or polluted, and where chlorination is used for biofouling control.
